1 (From Our Own Correspondent.) REEFTON, September 18. Mrs Kerr and son, who have been visiting Mr and Mrs E, J. Conway, left on return to Wellington on Friday, Mrs A. J. Chettlc, who was recently operated upon iu Greymouth Hospital, has returned home to Beefton, in a much improved state of health. Hon. W. 11. Mclntyre, Chairman of . the Nelson Education Board, visited . Black’s Point on Friday, when he . met members of the School Commit-, • tee, Messrs P. Carr, J, Fen son. and J. > Robinson (Secretary). After iuspecti ing- th,, building and grounds, Mr McIntyre asked that an estimate for rcpiling the school, erection of new gat e and other repairs, be obtained and forwarded to him at Nelson, so that it could be dealt with at thc Board’s meeting on Monday next. A team of Reefton District High School Primary girls, under Miss Kearns, visited Cronadun on Friday afternoon and played that school a game of basketball, and after a fast and exciting game th n Reefton team proved the winners by six goals to three. j At the Reef ton District High School on Friday afternoon the senior scholars assembled in the main room and witnessed the handing-over of an enlarged photograph of Lieut.-Col. W. S. Austin, DS-0., V.D. The School Committee were present and a num ber of visitors, including Mrs J. MeElwee. anil Airs S. Austin. Air W. B. Auld, the Chairman of the School Committee presided and in placing the photograph in the care of the headmaster (Mr W. S. Pratt), referred to the sterling character of the late Lieut.-Col,. Austin, and trusted that the photograph ami the plaque which it surmounted would always be a reminder to the scholars. Reefton School had (*very cause to be proud of the achievement of the late Air Austin, and th P school jnip-ils would do well to follow in the footsteps of Air Austin. Air James Patterson a member of the School Committee, and a contemporary ] upil of the Tate Air Austin, voiced his appreciation of Airs Austin’s donation of the photograph to the School, and as one who know th P late Air Austin particularly well, he pointed out to the pupils that thc late gentleman’s life had been one of which all could be proud. A citizen. a soldier anil a teacher, A-Ir Austin had always striven for th P highest, and he (the s> eaker) trusted that the photograph (which was a fine likeness) would be an encouragement to the present generation, and to generations that are to com? to carry on I the traditions which Air Austin so well carried out. Mr W. S. Pratt (headmaster), in thanking Air Auld for passing the photograph into thc earc, of the School, said that every care would b P . given to the plaque anc the pho to graph.
