(Per Press Association). March 30. The cable office at Wellington is being closed down. A decision was made recently to close the Wellington office of the Eastern Extension Australasia and China Telegraph Co. Ltd., and therefore both cables connecting Wellington with Sydney will be disconnected. The cable at present in use between Auckland and Sydney is a much faster one than that between Wellington and Sydney, and it is believed an efficient service will not be impaired by closing down the Wellington office. The cable steamer is now engaged on her task of making alterations to connect the working Wellington cable with Auckland. INVERCARGILL, March 29. Three young men, looking for cattle in the bush on Mr Lionel Gait’s property at Papatotara, near Tuatapere, were astonished to see what they thought to be an exceptionally large deer with peculiar antlers coming towards them across open swamp. The animal proved to be a moose, which had evidently wandered a long way from its usual haunts. The hoof marks were six and a-quarter inches wide. It is stated that the moose was about forty miles from where a herd is believed to be.
