DENNISTON NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) High School and Dental Clinic Con cert. —The second of a series of concerts for the purpose of raising finance to equip these institutions was hold at Denniston on Friday night last. The most pleasing feature of the function was the splendid patronage of the residents of both Hill townships. Air Mat Hewison, Chairman of the Denniston School Committee, presided. In his opening remarks, he explained the objects for which the concert, was being held. 44 It gave his and the Joint Committees’ of Burnett’s Face and Denniston more pleasure than he could express,” said Air Hewison, “to »ce such a fine attendance. For years both ends of the Hill had been working to bring about, for the education and health of their children, similar opportunities as those enjoyed by chib Iren in less isolated districts. The Committee were now able to offer almost' every educational facility, and it ap-| peared from the support that had been accorded the organisers, that their efforts were being appreciated, ami that parents were accepting these opportunities for .their children. The Committee had to publically thank the Westport Coal Company for a dona lion of £lO, and the Denniston Miners’ Union for £l5. The Company had also gone a long way in the direction of putting in lights and fittings of the Clinic. When on the occasion of the last visit of the Company’s Directors, a deputation waited on them for the purpose of obtaining an additional typewriter, Air Flavell had donated £l, and the Board found the balance. He also took the opportunity to thank all those who had so loyally supported the excellent teaching stalls of both schools, in the dressing and training of the children. He felt sure their labour ha<l been well appreciated by every one. It was the purpose of the Director of the High School to accept scholars for the classes, which were to bo conducted. There were many beys and girls who had left schools before they had acquired their proficiencies and also many adults. Here then was an opportunity, which they should avail themselves of. The fees were as moderate as they could be possibly made, and he sincerely hoped .that early application would be made to the Secretary, Air Allan Findlay.

Mr Hewetson’s speech was listened to with much interest and was heartily applauded. The concert programme which was thoroughly enjoyed included the following items:—

A most enjoyable dance followed .this being also well patronised. The proceeds were estimated at about £25; which should go a long way in the direction for which it is intended.
