WESTPORT NOTES.

, (From Our Own Correspondent.) WESTPORT, March 21. The Eileen Ward dredge appears to be doing good work on the bar. She was only recommissioned about a week ago, and has increased the depth in the line of beacons 3i feet. This gives a depth at low water of 14 feet. During the dry weather there has been no inconvenience from shingle, and the stuff has been easily removed. Owing to the previous stoppage in the working of the suction dredge, the material had hardened considerably, but they are now making good headway. The dredge has now to widen the cut and the fairway will be much improved. This is necessary to prevent ships going to sea lightly loaded. Although the electric light is for the present not available for Millerton, the pictures can still be shown, as the current is procured from the Granity dynamo. Readers will note by advertisement that Mr IL E. Holland, M.P., is to deliver a political address at Granity tonight (Thursday) at 8 p.ffi. Although Mr Holland has addressed meetings at both Millerton and Stockton, it may l'e taken for granted that there is something more to be said, and naturally a good attendance is anticipated. As an illustration of the worldly wisdom of educationalists, the following little triologue, overheard in a train between school teachers, is worth recounting. Mr A.: I think Mr Holland is having too much say about Samoa, don’t you? Mr B.: Yes, I think he is working himself out, don’t you?” Mr C.: I notice he did not answer those questions put by the Welfare League. 1 reckon he should have answered them. Mr A.: I did not notice them. Mr B.: I. did, but I ‘didn’t read them; what did they ask? Mr C.: I rcadMhem. They were about Samoa, and asked Mr Holland to reply. I don’t know exactly what was asked, but Mr Holland hasn’t answered, and I reckon he should do.— Tickets, please! Friday is polling day for the borough bye-election. 1 wonder if the workers will let. the Labour candidate down this time. The Westport Business Association is advertising Saturday and Monday next (from noon) as holidays, when members’ promises will be closed. There will be no late night on Saturday. The Saturday holiday was given in exchange for an award holiday on St Patrick’s Day. Al on day is given out of goodness of heart. It was stated in Millerton yesterday that there would be no meeting of the Union until Sunday next. Inquiries are being made from Westport concerning the New Zealand soldier in Sydney who has lost his memory. It is believed that he may be a member of a well known Buller family, Claude Leon Thompson, who was reported missing at the time of the Somme engagement in 1916. Subsequent information led the family to believe he was still alive, but they have not been able to get any trace of him.
