On account of the Greymouth Jubilee the local Government offices and also the banks will be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Westland schools’ picnic takes place at Greymouth, so Westland will be well represented both by adults and juveniles at the Jubilee. Grand and Common Jurors arc notified that they need not attend the sitting of the Supreme Court set down for Wednesday next.

The following is the result of the Newman Cup Point Handicap, second distance, of 50 yards, which was contested at the swimming carnival on Friday evening. First heat: W. Stevenson 12 sec Ist, D. McWhirter 9 se 2nd, S. Diedrich scr 3rd.— Time 44 seconds. Second heat: —C. Briggs 3 sec Ist, J. Stavely 3 sec 2nd, E. Randall 13 sec, 3rd, Time 37 secs. Final:—W. Stevenson, 12sec, Ist, E. Randalll3 sees, 2nd, D. McWhirter 9 sec 3rd.—Time 43 3-5 seconds. The residents of Matanui on the eve of the 23rd inst, tendered a dance and presentation to Mr G. L. Tennent and Mr W. T. Church Mr Church who has been head teacher of the Matanui (School for four years, has a very good iecord, while Mr Tennent has had a shorter term in the district as a storekeeper, was always very obliging. During the course of the evening Mr. T. Mcßride (Chairman of the Matanui School Committee) on behalf of the local residents soke of the sterling : qualities of both young men and expressed regret at their departure. The death is reported from the Waikato, of Mrs Rhoda Rawlings, wife of Mr Walter of Kaiata, railway department, who died suddenly on the operating table at "The Waikato Hospital on the 23rd inst. Mr Rawlings was well-known here and

many will extend their sympathy with Mr Rawlings concerning his bereavement.
