CIVIL SERVICE CUT. LONDON. February 25. A cut. of £8,500,000 has been made in the Civil Service estimates. The total of £292,000,000 includes: Empire Marketing £500,000, compared with £1,000,000 last year; Overseas Settlement £1,330,000 compared with £1,540,000, Department of Overseas Trade £321,000 compared with £329,000. ILFORD BYE-ELECTION. LONDON, February 24. The Ilford bye-election, owing to the death of Sir Frederick Wise, resulted: Sir George Hamilton (Conservative). 18,269; Mr Cornyns Carr (Liberal), 13,621; Mr Degruchy (Labour) 8922.
