CRICKET.

Plunket Shield. CANTERBURY DEFEATS AUCKLAND. BY ELEVEN RUNS. AUCKLAND, January 9. At 12.30, Auckland had scored 73 for one wicket (Bowley not out 39, Mills, e Page, b Read 7, Cooper not out 23, extras 4). At the luncheon adjournment Auckland were 128 for 3 wickets. (Bowley b McEwin 41, Cooper not out 46, Anthony, b Read 4, Gillespie not out 23, extras 7). McEwen, Canterbury’s slow right hand spin bowler, was tried for the first time in the match, vice Newman. His first hall was well up on the leg side, Bowley failing to connect. The second was similar but fatal to the batsman. It came off the pads and hit the wickets. 75/2/41. Anthony started ‘with a single, and Cooper cut Read for 4. With five men on the boundary it was difficult to get McEwan across the line. After scoring four, Anthony was beaten all the way by Read. 86/3/4. Gillespie filled the gap and was not happy to McEwin. He cocked one up into Newman’s hands at short forward leg, the Englishman dropping I it. Gillespie saved himself a pair of specs by driving Read for two. McEwin was obtaining a good spin and had the batsmen completely tied up at this stage. LATER. With the issue in doubt right up to the fall of the last wicket, Canterbury beat Auckland by eleven runs, at Eden Park to-day, and in so doing won two out of three of the Plunket Shield matches.

After a bad start, Mills going cheaply, Bowley and Cooper made a determined stand, but Bowley and Anthony wont in rapid succession. Gillespie played bright cricket for 25, and then followed a sparkling partnership between Dacre and Cooper. Dacre was at his best, and scored rapidly with good shots all round the wicket. He scored 76 and Cooper 80. They left Auckland with 70 to get, hut Read came to light with a new ball, and his fine bowling, coupled with the foolishness of Matheson, who tried a big hit off Merritt when ho and Player were batting well, and needed only 25, meant Auckland’s downfall. Canterbury deserved the victory, but Auckland, although beaten, were not disgraced. Scores: — CANTERBURY First Innings 244 Second Innings 251 AUCKLAND First Innings 198 SECOND INNINGS. E. IT.
