DEMSKY BEATS GLEESON. A VERY EVEN CONTEST. THE JUDGES DISAGREE. WELLINGTON, October 11. Paul Demsky was awarded the decision in a fifteen round professional contest with Gleeson for a purse of £2OO. Both men fought a hard, clean bout, Demsky, who was the aggressor, gaining the decision on points. Gleeson’s defence was clever. The judges disagreed, and the referee awarded the fight to Demsky. The verdict met with a mixed reception. BRITTON RETAINS TITLE. NEW YORK, October 10. At Havana, Cuba, Jack Britton retained the welterweight championship of the world, defeating Jimmy Kelly, of New York, in ten rounds. At a meeting of the local Association there were present:—Messrs J. F. Wilson (chair), H. O’Sullivan, White. K. V illiams, K. Skoglund and G. Perkins and A. Grogan (secretary). The prices were fixed as follow:— fifty reserved seats, £1; Stage, J 5/ .; Front Seats, 7/6; Dress Circle, 7/6; Back Seats, 4/-; Ladies 4/- to Dress Circle only. The Association voted £3 3s to the W. G. Atack Testimonial Fund, and one guinea to the W. Wrignt ’ road race fund. The Ashburton Athletic Club have matched “Duke” Maddox and Alf Lewis for November 2, the purse bein£9o.
