NATIONALISTS CONFERENCE GANDHI UNRELENTING. [A. and N.Z. Cable Association.] DELHI, Jan 16. A conference of political leaders in Bombay, held in private, with the object of securing united action, was attended by over two hundred persons, representative of all shades of opinion throughout India. Sir Sankaran Nair presided. Pundit Malaviya declared that the non-co-operation movement was spreading as the result of the Government’s mistakes, and the policy of wholesale repression, which he declared could not be justified. A resolution was drafted after a long discussion with the view to securing a further round-table conference which was thought would be acceptable both to Gandhi and the Government, but Gandhi refused to subscribe to the resolution, demanding as a preliminary, the release of all agitators and a change in the Government policy. A number of speeches by prominent leaders followed, and eventually a subcommittee was appointed to redraft the resolution. The conference adjourned. MADRAS NATIVES SUBDUED. SCHOOL CHILDREN’S GREETING DELHI, Jan 16. The Prince of Wales attended a demonstration by 12,000 children at Madras, representing 50 schools. A large native crowd received him with hearty cheers. The non-co-operation element, evidently subdued by Friday’s lesson, made no attempt to hinder the spectators assembling or demonstrating along the route. The Prince witnessed a display of gymnastics and attended a number of other functions including the races. He leaves to-morrow on a visit to Bangalore, and thence he goes to Mysore.
