Mr Is Jell, reports as follows iri the Lalbor Journal on the .condition ' of trade for the month of July as follows : — Business in general during the last • month was fairly satisfactory, although at intervals very fluctuating, owing chiefly to the irregular working of the shipping trade of *che port. Building trades are still very active, an 1 the indications are that they will continue so far some time to come. ■Carpenters and bricklayers are busy, and making good time. The weather for the last month was very favorable for on ■ building operations. Painters and paperhangcrs are all well ' Employed. Plumpers 'and'Tgasfitter's are busy. Engineering trade' is not very brisk, but it is expected to improve soon. Boot trade (general) is very fair; < repairing branch busy. ! Clothing trade is good for the season, although in some establishments not up to the standard of the corres- 1 ponding period of last year. The tailoring branch is very good for. the season. Dressmaking trade is rather slack. Retail trade in general is fairly .good. Grocers report business to be satisfactory. Ironmongers report trade as fair. Stationers .and booksellers, fairly good. Tobacconists and hairdressers • doing good .business. Butchers, bakers, and confectioners doing a very good trade. Fishmongers receiving regular supplies of fresh fish do a very lucrative business while it lasts, 'but there is nothing permanent aibout the trade. Miscellaneous trades: CoachibuildTng factories are fairly busy. Sash and door factories and joiners are busy. Furniture and upholstery factories, fully employed. Blacksmiths and tinsmiths are busy. Cycle-engin-eering trade, brisk. Brickmaking trade is slack. Timber industry: The last month was ,a very busy one in the sawmilling trade, plenty of orders coming in. The millers have been greatly ham- 1 pered lately owing to the insufficiency , of steamers "to "carry the timber away, ami at tne present time nearly all tlic mills are blocked up with timber. Unskilled labor : There weTe thirtytwo applications for employment during the month, fourteen being, married and eighteen single men. Ten were sent to employment. , . ■
