DUNOLLIE NOTES.

(Our Correspondent) The great event of the past .w?ek was the grand ball held under, the auspices of the Loyal Orange Lodge, lit was the biggest affair of 'ts kind' yet held here and passed off very s-uccessfully. The district continues to thrive, and building's are being erected. on every haiid. Messrs Pollock and Wylde of the State sawmill iniform me that .they have ordeTs on hand for timber to erect quite a dozen houses, and the' mill hands are. kept busy trying to supply the demand. Beyond being a trifle disagreeable and felling : -a. few trees the gale, of last Saturdiay .'and Sunday^ did but little damage here. % Yen. Archdeacon York 6i Greymouth -paid! t'his' district a. vis^t yesterday. Tihe" rev. gentleman as energetic as ever is doing his best to make the Anglican concent, a success in order to erect a Church of England in the ' district. ' The congregation v already possess a section and a, good site in Ward street. ' The Seddon Lodge of Drul'ds still continue to flourish . out here. It possesses a:bouit 100 members and is periodically purchasing saleable shares in the hall at Dunollie.- At the ordinary meeting on Thursday evening Mr PritclTaTd was admitted into,, the mysteries of Druidism. This deserving society, the first ins'titiited in 'the place consists mainly of young men, and with a good set of officers to administer its funds and conserve its finance should in time become very strong indeed. Arbor Day was not specially observed here. The local school had a holiday—that was all, only that and nothing more. The .author of this great day was such a persistent, enthusiastic and persevering Yankwee, that whenever he .senlt a letter^ or a card to a business man or a friend he monogrammed it with the words "plant ■trees." But tihe, Westland Land Board says to the section holders of tnese pants "chop them down" or forfeit, and so. the sound of the woodmian's axe is heard all daj long in Coal Greek. On Wednesday evening the progirairMne at. the Defeating Club was Impromptu Speeches. Fourteen of them were given and every member ■present spoke. 'Messrs Wylde (president), Russell (vice-president) and Liddle (secretary) were appointed a sub-committee to select a team of four to~<lo battle for the club in the. forthcoming- match' with Trinity. One of the most useful and practical subjects dealt with during the above debate was that introduced by Mr R. Pollock, "Is it advisable ( o form a local Vigilance Committee?"and although the gentleman spoke a long time on the question in, the affirmative, he did not quite exhaust the subject. It would be advisable. It would be cheap for one thing, ani it need not be nasty unless the members liked to make it so. There is a w*h -le 'bundle of local question that a local body of the kind, indicated could urge on. God helps those who .hep themselves, ;ind i this district wishes to obcain a'l tJic con ' veniences of good roads, of 'train taci- 1 Tides, of letter '■a-.ymg-; of -proper drainage etc, it h-.?d br.tcer besiir itself, and look to it thai those .n authority are kept. ■cou.:ni'.:.".!'v iiv mind, of the wants and- clray/bac-Vs of the township. ' I. commejid this par :o tae public-spirited men of the '.l:si.rict a 3 coming from the 'Debating Club- and well worthy of being acted upon. ■ It is said that the Police Department intend erecting a, station, -out here. It is iwelil. The' edifice ' in which Consta,bJe banner the 'man in oharge' .^has 'to live is not what you would call a palace. .

On the 15th ins'i. the Cape Colony Assemibly read a second time the' Agricultural Credit Bank Bill, based on the Australian priticijpk. It provides for co-operative banking associations to raise -with Sta T te guarantee on mortgage security. The Bill was Referred to a- Select Committee., The^Duned?n Star understands that 1 a meetirug is to fee Held in Dunedin to finally settle the proposrl io raise the price of red pine in '.' .it town. The pxice of this timber has risen already- in Southland by a shilling- per iooft super, and saAvmillers have inttmated that they intend to charge for tonnage in flooring and lining, which means, in some instances an advance of not. a shilling ., but up to 2s 3d:'-,-
