— : -■■» ' . . ' -' . ■ ■ In a recent issue of the London Daily News Mr Chiozza Money, M.P., gives an interesting account of recent developments of Japanese State enterprise. If appears that, the Japanese Government, after having sent over engineers to Europe and America to investigate the most advanced methods" of carrying on the iron and steel industry, decided to establish Government iron and steel works. For purpose it spent £1,060,000 in the four years ending 1901. It also laid out in improving Wakamstsu Haribor, so as to secure cheap supplies of coajj and ore 1 by sea. So that, • says .Mr !Mft|e"y; the .establishment cost the frjf}|ar|.nd enterprising Japanese as much as £2,000,060, which is as though a British Government said, "Let us spend £50,000"— ib'ut can anyone suppose a British Government spending '*s^,cooi.ooo,on anything but war? 'ihc works have already produced QOjCOO tons of finished iron 1 and steel each year, and 7000 workmen are employed. The Government is -anxious for the comfort of " the ( workmen.
