THE LATEST POLITICAL NEWS.

A meeting of the Oppositionists was held at 2 o'clock this afternoon and lasted until 3. On the motion of M'Gregor, seconded by Anderson, it was resolved unanimously to request Major Atkinson to form a Ministry and to support him until he brings forward his financial proposals ; and if they are satisfactory, to assist in carrying them out. Atkinson accepted the task, and proceeded at once to inform the Government that he was prepared to undertake the formation of a Cabinet. It is understood that the leader on whom the choice of the party has fallen is to be left unfettered in the distribution of portfolios and all preliminary obstacles now being cleared away. It is expected that the names of the new Government will be announced on Monday. The Hon. Fredk. Whitaker is not likely to join, and among the new names canvassed as probable Ministers, in addition to those already given, are Barron and Bruce. Atkinson expects that a fortnight will be required to formulate his proposals. Previous to the great caucus, some smaller fragmentary ones were held. The Canterbury members, who favored the late Government, had an informal gathering, and determined to simply watch the course of events for the present. A. dozen of the new members also met, and decided not to pledge themselves to a new Ministry, but to preserve an independent attitude until the political situation had assumed a more decided shape.
