Or Logan refused, and it was then moved that the Council adjourn. A division was taken, resulting in a tie, and the Mayor gave his casting vote in favor of proceeding with the business. The Central RailwayThe Chamber of Commerce committee held a meeting to-day, at which Messrs Oliver and Stewart were present, re the Otago Central Railway. A resolution was come to to urge Parliament to confirm tho resolution of the House in 1877 setting aside certain areas of land for sale for the specific purpose of constructing the Otago Central Railway, by passing a special Aot for the purpose, and also to obtain a vote towards the further extension of the line. EducationalAt the Education Board to-day a letter was read from Mr John Hislop, in reply to a resolution forwarded by the Board. The letter said—“ lam to say that the resolution recommending that power be given to sell the General Education Reserves involves a very serious question of policy, affecting not only Otago but the whole of New Zealand, and that, after giving the subject in all its bearings very careful consideration, tbe Government are at present unable to see that it wonld bo expedient to give the power proposed, but rather the reverse,"
