WOMAN’S DEATH

INQUEST OPENED FURTHER. INQUIRIES TO BE MADE The circumstances surrounding the death, of Ellen. Birchfield, 42, married, which occurred on Thursday, were the subject of an inquest which opened yesterday, .and was adjourned in order that further inquiries might be made. The acting coroner, All* A. I G. Beere J.P., presided and the jury of four were Alessrs Kenneth R. AVaitc (fore man), S. Douglas Buntin, Charles 11. Ferris-, and William R. McKinley. Sergeant L. T. M e ore conducted the proceedings on behalf qf the police. .

Henry Thomas Webb, brother of the deceased, said his sister was a married woman, 45 years of age. He received la call to the hospital about 4 p.m. on Thursday, and on arrival found his sister in a low condition. About half an hour later, deceased received a. blood transfusion, after which the doctor informed the relatives that the patient was brighter, and they accordingly returned home. Witness was called to the hospital again at 8.30 a.m., and his sister died half an hour later.

Witness/ added that hi® sister had not been in hospital until an accident which occurred on Christmas. Eve, when she was taken to the Cook Hospital where she was a patient for about a month. Since her discharge she wa.s an out-patient for a. time. Witness bad seen bis sister practically every day since she came out of hospital, and knew that she still complained of suffering pain in her .shoulder and head and of getting no. sleep. Prior to the accident the deceased was ■of a bright disposition, and her health appeared to be good. Her husband at present was away in Australia looking for a business: opening, and it wyvs his intention to take her over as soon as he became settled. The deceased was admitted to a private hospital on the day before her death, after taking suddenly ill while on her way to the Cook Hospital. Senior-Sergeant Moore asked for an adjournment sine die. Further inquiries were to> bo made. The adjournment was granted.
