That anomalies exist in fhe .scale of charges proposed by the Poverty Bay /and East Coast Carriers.’ Association, was the opinion expressed at a meeting of the Poverty Bay provincial executive, of the Farmers’ Union yesterday, and it wa-si decided to lay these anomalies, before the proper authorities.

The secretary of the Poverty Bay and East Coast Carriers’ Association «i ote stating that he noted the union was agreeable to the association’s suggestion to advertise the schedule of charges as available for inspection prior to the sitting of the Transport Licensing Authority at a.n early date. As soon as the exact date cf the Authority’s sitting was known, that procedure would he- adopted, the schedule to he available .at least ten days before the Authority ended. The secretary (Air stated that he had forwarded the .suggested charges to Air D. Williams, chairman of the Waiapu County Ooim cil who in the course of his comments had -coated many anomalies. All* AA Tillias had suggested that the rates should he based on per ton mileage, taking into consideration the number of .crossings, gates, lengths of day roads, etc. Air P. AV. Alossman said hen heard that wool had been carted to Napier from Alanutuke -at 4s hut at Tiniroto ho had paid 11s. It. wasi stated by the secretary thatthe proposed rates for theep from Gisborne to the railhead at Taneatuawere 2s 6d .a. head for most types. Air J. E. Brosnahan contended that that sum was too. high, and' encouraged the use of the road. Two-tootli wethers off the shears at 2s 6d a head meant £2O for each truck load. He had justl sent- somei through at 2s a head.

The chairman, All* F. S. Bowen, said that farmers could not be expected to use lorries if the rates were too high. After some discussion it was decided that Air Williams’ letter should be sent on to the Licensing Authority at Auckland and also, submitted to a meeting of the hoard Gisborne, at which All* J. E. Brosnahan expressed his willingness, to. give evidence.
