Opotiki has had a very narrow escape from serious floods and. but for the stop bank probably would hare been flooded. Rain has fallen with more or ie-s intensity since Sunday morning, a total of 527 points having been registered up to 9 a.m. today a record for Opotiki for three days’ fall. The month’s fall to date has been 11.70 inches. Rivers commenced to ris P yesterday afternoon and. by daybreak this morning, were in heavy flood. Some water was across Church street and portion of the cemetery was flooded. Business people in many case.? had to remove stock to higher fixtures as surface water was getting into some shops. The main highway to Taneatn a was well tinder water this morning, four feet being across the road near AYniotahi. preventing service car? reaching Taneatua, but later, water went down and a car. which should have been in at 12 noon, arrived at 3 p.m. Slips and flooded crock-, field up. a Gisborne car. which should have reached Gpotiki at 10.30 a.m. and did not arrive until 2 p.m. The Alotu Tfiil is blocked f>v slips and there was fairly deep water across AY aiaw a Flats. Tlie Coast road to To Kaha, is also blocked, with slip? and rivers in high flood. Alany farmers Surrounding Opotiki moved stock from low-lying to higher ground for safety. It is not known yet whether nn-v stock was drowned. Prospects now are for an improvement- gradually as the sun has been shining at times and the rain is getting less.
