MUSIC EXAMS
DATE EXTENDED TWO WEEKS. ENTRIES ON MAY IS. Advice has been received by Mr F. J. Rowley that the written examinations conducted by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music London will to held two weeks later than announced in the* syllabus. Entries for aY. written examinations close on Wednesday, May 15. and the examinations will lm held on Saturday, June 2'2. Practical examinations! will be herd as far as possible on the same dates as last year, except in some North Island centres, where a change has been requested. Entries will close on July 1, in North Tslanl con'tires, .and on September 1 in the South Island. The examiner will .he Mr Lloyd Powell, who was born at Ironbr’-dgo Shropshire, of Welsh descent, on both sides. I-Ie entered the Royal College of Music at an early ago, studied with Mr Mn-.rmn.dukc Barton (pianoSir Walter Alccck (organ), ■Sir,Charles V. Stanford (composition) and' also with- Sir Frederick Bridge and Dr Wood. He won an open scholarship for pianoforte, which was exchanged, for the Hey wood Lonsdale (Shropshire, scholarship), the Hopkmson Gold Medal for pianoforte.playing and the Dannreuther prize for the best performance of a. pianoforte concerto. 5 On leaving the Royal College ot Music he was awarded a grant from the patrons’ fund to study abroad and went first- to Berlin and then to Basle (where, he. joined Busoni’s master ela'ss fdr pianoforte playing. Mr poivell has given concerts in Pans anj Berlin, and has p’ayed with the leading- orchestras in London and the provinces. He was appointed a professor at the Royal Oollosre of Musi'ej’ and an examiner to the Associat qdi Board of the Royal Schools of Music, London, in 1919, and has undertaken examination tours in Australia, Canada, and South Africa.
