The fortnightly meeting of the Gisborne Borough; Council was held last .evening, the Mayor (Mr. Johri Jackson) presiding over the following: Crs, H. E. Maude, G. Bradley Smith, J. W. H. Holmes, J. 11. Hall, H. H. DeCosta, D. S. Thompson, W, J. Mac Gibbon and W. Cave. The Gisborne Amateur Athletic and Harrier Club wrote expressing regret that a cow had been allowed to graze on Childers road reserve and stating that every care of the property would be taken in the future.—The letter was received. The treasurer of the St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church wrote objecting to the present charge of £4 for wafer supplied. Not more than 4000 gallons per annum were used and; at the ordinary rate, the charge would be only 6/- pel- annum. The church, therefore, offered 10/- per annum for tlic water supplied.—The matter was referred to the council solicitor for a report on the legal position. The Cook County Council forwarded approval of the leasing of the aerodrome and authorised the Borough Council to act as its agents in the matter.—The letter was received. The Gisborne Uneiriployed Workers Movement applied for a license for the social room and asked that the fee for same should be remitted. — The Mayor pointed out that the council had no authority to rernit the license fee, but, on his suggestion, it was decided to grant the license and to pay the fee out of the unauthorised expenditure. The Mayor of Wellington wrote suggesting that a local subscription list should be opened to assist in (he purchase of a portrait of Lord Bledisloc to be hung in the National Art Gallery, Wellington.—A contribution of £ls from Gisborne was hoped for.— It was decided to open a subscription list arid that the council should head the. list with a donation of £2 2s. A joint letter urged that Russell street, between Fox and Ballance streets, should be bitumenised and that a bitumen footpath for Russell street should be included in the next estimates. —It was decided to refer the requests to the estimates committee. The next 'meeting of the council, which would fall on a holiday, was fixed for April 23, a day later thausual. The Mayor’s honorarium foi the coming term was fixed at £2OO per annum, as in the past, a motion bv Cr. Thompson, seconded by Cr. Hall, that the amount be £2s'o, being defeated. On the suggestion of the Mayor, the works committee was asked to inquire into the matter of restricting parking of ears in front of shops on nights other than Saturdays.

GENERAL REPORTS. PUBLIC WORKS COMMITTEE The public works committee report ed as follows: ‘A list- of contemplated works for the fortnight was submitted by the engineer, tko principal ■ being.—Continuation of hot mix paving - ., renewal of piles and decking Roebuck road bridge ; replacing decking Stanley road bridge, etc. “In regard to the electric motor on hire for use at the temporary pumping plant Matawhero bridge, your committee recommend that the motor be returned tc the owners. “The East Coast Airways Ltd. have completed laying down the floor ot hangar in bitumen and painted the building, and have in hand the filling in of a depression- which they consider dangerous, on one of the runways. This is being done under private contract. The council,- as agreed upon, have placed wire netting over the windows -and completed the rolling of the ground. “In accordgricc with the practice o.f the council it,, (was decided to rfocommcn that, general employees bp granted a holiday on Easter Saturday, in addition toi the usual award holidays. “The engineer reported that a pro perty owner whose hedge encroached considerably on the footpath had refused to cuf. this hedge back to tlie boundary. The committee instructed tbe clerk to notify th c property owner that the hedge in question must be cut back to the boundary, failing which further stops be taken to have the provisions of the Act and bylaw enforced. “An application to sub-divide prem isos with a dividing will constructed of wood frame and fire resisting plaster board was discussed 1 by your committee, when it was decided the application bo granted subject to the work being carried out. to the satisfaction of the borough engineer. “The engineer submitter a report and estimates for grading and rcgravelling - footpaths in Berry street (£4O) and re,gravelling footpaths Upper Palmerston .road (£20).-As these works are essential your committee recommend the engineer he authorised to effect, the necessary improve meats. In regard to footpaths, Vatley roacj as no formed footpaths exist, except -a length of 9 chains the formation of permanent fooL paths in this * street cannot be considered until the large stormwater* dqain now located near the fence lines is piped and filled in. As there is, lio money available for stormwater drainage works in thp Manjgapapa area, your committee recommend 1 the formation of the footpaths be held over in the meantime, with the exception of the 9 drains referred to, which could be completed.’’ ENGINEER’S REPORT. The engineer (Mr E. It. Thorium) reported, inter alia, Gn the following matters: “.Reserves.-—Usual work link been carried out at. .the various reserves and at Ariznc Park and Aberdeen road vegetable gardens. “Maintenance.—Maintenance Works comprised: Street cleaning.; cleaning stormwater drains and sumps; repairs to various streets; trimmihg drains rind footpaths; cartage of spoil; mowing grass on.. Toad sides; grading gravelled roads; mino r repairs to plant and buildings.

The main works comprised : Vegetable gardens at Anzne Park and Aberdeen road reserves; clean ing anj trimming drains and footpaths:; grading river bank Read s Quay; various jobs at the council's yard; cutting noxious weeds.’’ WATER-WORKS Dealing with the waterworks the engineer intimated that reticulation throughout ‘die boronj'»h had been given the usual attention. One new service, in - Ormond road, was installed.' Ga!uge readings were; Highest llolbs. lowest 86>bs. Work had been carried out as follows; Repairing mains at Te Arai Valley ana Mamituke; repairing tobvs. valves, 'Services, etc; preparing surface of Taumata Hill for sowing, own in grass. The main line was| maintained in working order. There was one leak during tl e fortnight, viz, at Manutuke Bridge—Taumata Hill supply being turned on for 5 hours while repairs were being effected. The quantity -of water that pasried through the Venturi, meter for the weeks ending March 25th., anj April Ist. 1935, was 6.620 COO and 6,700,009 gallons respectively. The reports were adopted.
