Papworth 13 yds. shot the possible and divided the stake. Glennie 15yds., with 11 breaksj was second. Opotiki Club Handicap for Hancock and Co.s Trophy: M. Ross 11yds., and W. Oates 17yds. with 13 birds each, divided the prize. Twenty-two entries. OPOTIKI RUGBY UNION The annual meeting was held on Saturday nighf, Mr G. S. Moody, (president), presiding over a good attendance. . The annual report and balance sheet were approved, the latter showing a credit balance of £52 Is Bd. The election of officers resulted': Patron, Mr J. 11. Reid (de-elected) ; presidents. Mr G. S. Moody (re-elect-ed). Mr Burrett paid a tribute to the great assistance of Mr Moody in helping to foster the game. Vice-presidents, the presidents of affiliated clubs; hon. surgeons, Drs. Budd and Candy; selector : After a ballot as to whether there -should he a sole selector or three selectors, it was decided to appoint a sole selector. This will be done at the first meeting of the management committee. Auditor, Mr Chas. Fleming (re-elected); secretary arid treasurer, Mr P. J. Fox (reelected) ; delegates to Bay of Plenty Rugby Union, Messrs G. S. Moody and S. M. Jephson. Mr G. S. Moody promised to donate a trophy for the third grade competition. At subsequent meeting of the management committee, Mr S. M. Jephson was elected chairman. It was decided to open the season cn May 4, Permission was given to the Op<tiki Maoris to pl y a match for the Ratana Cup against the Thames Maoris on Easter Saturdav.

ALLEGED SLANDER EX-DEPUTY MAYOR . SUES COUNCIL MEMBER (Special to the Times.) OPOTIKI, April 9. Great interest was shown by the public in a case which was called in the Magistrate’s Court this meriting before Mr E. L. Walton, S.M. T. Hitchens, ox-deputy Mayor of Opotiki, sued S. Patterson, a member of the Borough Council, for damages for alleged slander utte r ed at a meeting of the borough council. The case had been adjourned twice and, when called this morning, Mr Cooney, of Te Puke, said he understood the case was not being proceeded with. Mr East, for Mr Hitchens, said that lie had looked into the law and found that ho must- claim special damages as he could not claim general damn gen, but lie could not sustain the claim for special damages and must, therefore, withdraw. HOSPITAL NURSES’" “CUTS'’ At a meeting of the Opotiki Hospital Board, the estimates .for the criming year were considered. Mr J. S. Moody said that nurses’ salaries should be increased. The chairman (Mr F. J. Short) siiggestrid that the cuts be restored. They could include that, so that the secretary could make up his estimates accordingly. It was decided to restore 10 per cent of the cuts in salaries, this to include the matron. .
