A remarkable story " :{l s told by Dr. L. .T. Conrrie at a dinner in London of the graduates of the University of New Zealand about a man sorvincr in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. This man claimed that he could remember th© names and number of every other soldier of his battalion. Headquarters was’ blown up and all records destroyed. This gave a chance to the man to prove hj s claim, and to the astonishment of his commanding officer, ho supplied from memory not only the name and number of every man killed in the explosion, butthe names and. addresses of the next of kin. That man today is Dr. A. C. Aitke.n, Professor at the University of Edinburgh. Sir William Afarris, who presided, recalled that 40 years ago he and Lord Rutherford, who was also present at tHe dinner, wore in lodgings together as students of the iTew Zealand University.
