A move by tho United States gram exporters to have the State Department formally protest against the lucent refusal by the United Kingdom to grant a preferential rate on Canadian grain transhipped across the United States, was crystallised on Wednesday with a conference between the Assistant-Secretary of State, Air. Rogers, and representatives of the North Atlantic grain exporting agencies and officials of State a-nd municipal agencies. The grain-men contended that the new regulation would have the oliect of diverting grain now shipped by American carriers through American elevators to the Canadian seaports, Montreal, Halifax and St. John. The. United Kingdom ruling arose out of the recent Ottawa Imperial Con ferencc. Canadian grain, to got 'the preferential tariff rate must be shipped through Canadian ports. The Department made it clear that it is reserving tbe right to protest against this, and possibly other developments of tlie Ottawa Conference.
