DEFENCE PAY CUTS

MINISTER DENIES CONCERTED MOVE TO RESIGN.

MEN FORTUNATE TO I3E IN FAIRLY SECURE POSITIONS.

(Press Association.! WELLINGTON, Jan. 12

Tito opinion is expressed by the Minister of Defence, the Hon. J. G. Cobbo, that, although. the officers and staff of the Defence Department had suffered reductions in pay and emoluments, in line with those of other branches of the Public Service, no credence could be given to the statement made in some quarters that there was a concerted move .on the part of some members of the Defence Department to. resign their offices.

The Minister stated that he understood that one of .the main reasons which actuated Major W. Ivory to resign his commission, was that he intended going to England, anticipating to receive a better appointment there.

Mr. Cobbc remarked that the salary or wages of officers and men of the Public Service, and of those in almost every avenue of employment outside the Public Service, had had to be cut to meet the present lean times. “These are/’ lie adder., ‘Eery bad times for everybody in every country, and a man in a position of fair security to-day is certainly very fortunate, although in many instances his emoluments might not in. his opinion bo commensurate with his service.”
