Ae Ruutoria on Wednesday, .Timi Ixaiwai and 11. Reach appeared before Messrs 1. 8. C. Dalguirns and R. H. Wiekstead, J.’sP., .charged with breaking and entering the store of Mr H. J. Hayden , on. Saturday night, biscuits and bottles of soft drinks being stolen. Accused were remanded till January 18.

Before Mr i\ 11. liarpor, S-M-, in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday a man appeared on remand on charges of drunkenness and of procuring liquor ,while prohibited. Accused made a voluntary application for committal to Rotoroa for one year, and was convicted and discharged. Tho Magistrate made an order suppressing accused’s name in view of the publication affecting bis means-of livelihood.

As tho result of prompt action on the part of a boy, a girl named Mar. ino, who is a -strong swimmer, was rescued from drowning in the Uawa river at Tolaga Bay on Wednesday. About noon the girl wa s attempting to swim the river, but when about half-way across became exhausted. At that time she was almost under tho bridge. Her calls for help were beard by a -boy .who was fishing. With much presence of mind lie drew up Ids li.ue and manoeuvred it into the hands of the girl, thus enabling her to reach the pier where she rested till help was procured. This ig the third rescue from drowning at Tolaga Bay witin. a few days, the other two Incidents occurring on tho beach.

During the visit of the Director ul Education, Mr T- B. Strong, to G>sborne; a lew weeks ago, various proposed reforms in tho educational system in. this district were discussed. One suggestion was that .an intermediate school should be established in Gisborne, and Mr Strong made the proposal, that the- Gisborne Central School should thus bo transformed, and tho pupils in the lower standards distributed amongst the suburban schools. He mado it clear that his proposal wag merely tentative and had -to bo considered by the Education Department. Nothing further was heard of tEo proposal until yesterday when .the Gisborne members of the Hawke’s Bay Education. Board, Messrs J. S. Wauchop and T. A. Coleman received a letter from the Director of Education, stating that tlie Minister was not prepared to approve of the proposed changes in connection with the establishment of an intermediate school until all the circumstances and issues had .been further considered.

A Sydney P.A. cable stales that a party of 77 farmers representative of tlio whole of the agricultural interests of Victoria, arrived there en route to New Zealand on Saturday. '"Unbroken sunshine has been. the order lor several days past, with exceptional heat. The thermometer registered 85 degrees in the shade on Wednesday, (which was snot only the highest reading this summer, but is possibly the highest reading recorded in Invercargill. In January, 1922, 84 degrees was reached, and readings of 82 degrees havo been, fairly frequent. Invercargill’s previous. hottest- day ibis summer was on December 26, the reading being 80.5 degrees. On Wednesday the maximum point was reached in the early afternoon. The solar heat on Wednesday reached 137 degrees, the highest this year, though in former years 142 degrees had been recorded.
