gineer. The Stratford County Council wrote requesting the council to support a resolution recommending that the Government pay .all local bodies’ rates duo by farmers for the current year and waive its claim for land tax.— lt was decided to support the resolution.

The ' Kaiapoi Borough Council asked support for a resolution to request the Minister of Franco to introduce legislation to bring about a compulsory reduction in. the rate of bank interest. —Tb w;/> decided to support the resolution.

The report of the engineer, ATr. A. G. Lucas, was as follows: ‘Aloui riding.—The has been engaged grading in loose metal during the holiday period. The footpaths in the Alatawai township have been cleaned up. “ Waihuka riding.—-Top-divs-dug between Air. Tomhleson’s and Otoko is be;ug carried ou.i. The grader lias been grading in 100-e metal between Otoko anu the boundary. Owing to weather conditions I was obliged to metal then Alabaki bridge approach, and part of the hill on December 24. as this section become very greasy and dangerous to traffic. The slips on Oliver toad have bedn cleared. Aletailing on the Rnkuaron-Tahorn. x-oad will be started this week. “Mangatu riding.—The contractor has completed top-dressing on the Mangnm.aia road. ‘‘Wnipaoa riding.—Some widening and hanking at curves is being carried out on the Whnfnfuiu highway. Weeds and thistles have been cleaned up in the Whatatuiu township. “Kanakanaia riding.—The topdressing on the highway is prooepditag satisfactorily, and a gang is clearing up the old slips. Ngatapa riding.—Spa vd s are being delivered to Bore for crushing for the highway. "Karnka riding.—The grader has been engaged grading in loose metal and scarifying where necessary. The surfaceman is engaged widening out and hanking had corners. Several parts of the highway in ibis riding -are in want of metal.” The report was adopted.
