Tt was announced by the Education Department, to-day that instead of the university bursaries being awarded automatically to students who possessed liigber leaving certificates, the awards this year will be based on the results of tho University e.nco Scholarship examination, and will be made by the Education Department instead of as previously by tho university. The bursaries will now be called University National Bursaries, and will be tcfnable in general for a per iod of three years, which may ho extended by one additional year. Students who at present aro holding university bursaries, and who have not completed the ordinary period of three years, will bo allowed to do so, hub students who desire an extension of their bursaries, or who have not previously hold one, will bo required to make application to the Director of Education not late'' than February 1. Tho Government has decided that expenditure under this heading must bo reduced, so that only a limited -number of new bursaries will bo available this year.
