WOMAN'S STRANGE STORY (Press Association’ CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 20. Complaint of an assault followed by robbery on a woman living alone in a small shop at Leithfield beach was made this morning to the Christchurch police. It was alleged by the, woman, Mrs. Annie Elizabeth Evans, aged 61, that two men broke into her home, threw ammonia into her eyes, seized her by the throat, bound her hand and foot to the bed, ransacked the house and took jewellery and £5 in money. ‘The .story has boon investigated by the police, but _ no information from them is available. It is now stated that a doctor's examination of the woman discovered no bruisino- or other hurts, such as might have been expected she would have suffered in the encounter she described. Ropes with which she alleged she had been tied ' wero very unskilfully knotted The jewellery which she alleged had been taken was found in the houso. No conclusive evidence was discovered of any goods whatever having been taken. Two men, whom the woman alleged she' recognised as her assailants! are swaggers who have been camping in the vicinity. They were able to establish that tl*py were not in the neighbourhood. It is understood the. pc%co may discontinue the inquiry.
