MELBOURNE, March 11. Hopes are entertained that the industrial Disputes Board of the Chamber of Manufactures, to which has been transferred the- control of the timber strike, will effect speedy end to the trouble. Many of the unions involved are perturbed at the serious state of affairs reached. which is growing worse daily. It is stated that a request from union headquarters for a round-table conference would probably be granted. Five hundred men employed at the Ford motor works at Geelong were dismissed as the result of the timber strike, and additional dismissals are pending.
