FIRST TRIAL FOURS

The Gisborne Rowing Club’s races for the First Trial Fours were advanced a further stage last evening, two good races eventuating. The first to the post were P. Foster (str.),/Sloan, A. Shaw and Hay, and C. Shaw (str.), G. Ball, Slade and S. Sheet. Although dogged with bad luck throughout the race,; Foster proved a sterling stroke and won by half a length. Right at the- start Foster’s No. 2 caught a “crab” which allowed Shaw to get a lead of about two lengths, but quickly re covering. Foster steadied his crew down and set out in chase and overhauled Shaw before reaching Derby Street bridge and got a dead of half a length, but here his bow got into difficulty with his seat, but continued to row gamely on a “fixed” seat and a stern race from Derby Street bridge followed Foster, “all out”, winning by a narrow margin. The only other race was between G. J. Jeune (str.), Cairns, Knox and O’Dwyer, and P. TV Fromm (sir.), K. Stout, Bennett and „ Hamilton. Right from the start Jeiine, rowing a nice even stroke,, drew'away and at the footbridge was, leading I ronim by about- two lengths. Fromm set opt. in . chase ancL.at, Derby Street Bridge had reduced the gap to threequarters of a length, but Jeune had too much up his sleeve and in a ding-dong race down the straight won by tlireequarters of a length.
