Lissant Clayton, United candidate "for the Gisborne seat, that prominent Reform supporters owned areas of pumice land, in. the Taupe district, near the ,°! Jb.e new railway, was made at Haiti last evening, by Mr W. D i-ysuar. ' [- • -«■ ■‘v - . • . << ;l notice that Mr Clayton persists m alleging that prominent Reformers own large areas of the Taupo pumice lands,” said Mr Lvsnar. /‘He has even gone so far as to give names, mentioning Sir James Gunson, Messrs . Wenzl Scholium and Samuel Vaile. When I noticed this, I wired aWay to Sir James Gunson and to-day I received the following reply:
“Statement alleging .that I own pumice land in Taupo area is utterly false. I have no interest and never ‘have had interests directly or otherwise in any -lands in or anywhere near the district. These baseless rumors designedly calculated to damage Reform candidates in the eyes of the electors constitute the only ammunition of the United Party, which I am sure will be realised by the great majority of electors. Kindly contradict the slander. Best wishes.—• •/. H. (HINSON.”
“That speaks for itself,” continued Mr Lysnar, “and I do not need to enlarge on it, except that I must say I regret .that any candidate should take such an extraordinary action as charging these people, so far away from Gisborne, With influencing the Government to run the Taupo railway near lands they are alleged to own in the Taupo district.”
