ARRIVAL’ IN GISBORNE. OFFICIAL CALLS RAID. HALS. Diomede, the ?isles hip of the New Zealand squadron itag ship, 11.M.5. Dunedin, arrived in the roadstead al 11.-15 a.m. yesterday on a live-days’ visit to this port, this being ono of the periodical visits of vessels of the squadron to this district. . The officers 'and crew of . tile warship were welcomed .to Gisborne hy an official party including the chairman of the Harbor Hoard (ME *•. (-. Sherratt), and the Deputy-Mayor (Mr J. Blair), who were received at the head of the gangway by Captain Wells arid Commander Godfrey. During an informal discussion the officers ami men were accorded'a warm welcome to the town and district, it being stated that arrangements had been made foi the entertainment ol the visitors whilst here. A programme ol entertainments, arranged by a representative committee was submitted to I aptnin Wells, who confirmed them and thanked the visitors for their generosity. Captain Wells entertained the visitors and later returned the official call on the Deputy Mayor (Air J. Blair) at the municipal chambers. A, number of the officers and crew were granted shore leave to attend the sports at the reserve last evening, to which they wore conveyed hy citizens in cars. To-day and to-morrow the Union Steam Ship Co. have arranged to run the Tuatea out to the' warship with passengers to inspect her, hut- a small charge will be made. The question of transport of children to and Horn the ship is being considered and ad vice is awaited from head office.
