COLD DOUCHE.

AUCKLAND PRESS COMMENT ON NEW POLITICAL PARTY.

R FtFORM ABO f.ITT ON WOULD MEAN JiABOR GOVERNMENT. WHO IS BEHIND LATEST . ORGANISATION?

((Special to the Times.) AUCKLAND, Feb. 9. In a criticism of Mr Forbes speech on behalf of the limed l arty. the Herald says: ‘“The new organisation takes as U>_ slogan, ‘The Reform Party must go. It mndit to realise that, it it carries this battle-cry through the country effectively and that if the Reform Party does go, the Labor Party must come. If it could produce more than a catch-cry and a purely negative proposition lor the voter, it it had a leader of strength and personality and a policy showing insptiation and originality, it might appeal to the people to their love of change. It has nohodv comparable in capacity and personality with the Prime Minister. Until it can find such a man all these efforts to re-create the glory that once w,ns the old Liberal Party to put it on stable basis, are hopeless.” , , ■ The Star, a local Liberal organ, administers a rather cold douche to Air Forbes' efforts. It says: “It is no reflection of Air Forbes, who has served the Liberal cause long and sincerely, to say that criticising the Government is as easy as robbing a blind man. Its offences are rank and smell to heaven. The country is ready for a change. Dissatisfaction with the Government is widespread mid, in the whole history of New Zealand, there never was a better opportunity for an Opposition with on orgy, ideas and leadership. A Liberal Party, well organised, fearless and capably led, could look forward with confidence to. displacing tlie Government. The United Party claims to he the third party for which the country is looking, hut it still has to convince the country of its ability to supply what is needed. Attacks on the record of Reform will not entirely satisfy the public that in its own mind it has already riddled the Government. The public wishes to know more about the new party, what it stand's for and who is behind it.”
