In reply to overtures from various fanners’ bodies urging him to compel New Zealand butchers to label the frozen meat offered by them for sale, the Minister of Health (Hon. J. A. Young) issues a statement e that, though lie appreciates that Hie request is a reasonable one and desirable, such a regulation would be difficult to administer. In the past, owing to the great inconvenience which would he experienced in labelling all unwrapped joints in a permanent, and at the same time hygienic, manner, the regulations under the Sale of Food and Drugs Act have provided exemption from labelling, and if it is reasonable to require frozen meat to be labelled, the same stand must be taken witn regard to chilled meat. At times there would he considerable, difficulty in proving that a piece of meat had merely boon chilled, was frozen and thawed, or was “fresh within the meaning of the term. toV tins reason no” action will he taken until this problem is solved.
