NEW YEAR RACES AT PARK

The programme of nine motor cycle races to be staged by the G is-* borne Sports Motor Cycle Club at the Park racecourse on Monday next. New Year’s Day, should, and doubtless will, draw a large attendance of the public. Large entries have been received and exciting finishes should be witnessed. Grass track motor racing is universally regarded as one of the most spectacular sports in the world to-rlay and the course at Te Hapara, being over a mile round and very wide, is capable of allowing high speeds with the minimum amount of danger. Amongst the events to be contested is the N.Z. heavyweight championship, in which the famous Percy Coleman, the present holder of the title, will meet some well-known riders from different parts of the Dominion. Coleman ’will bfe a 7-9 Harley-Davidson. Other riders competing will include : Jl. P, Arnott' of Napier, with there machines, a 7 h.p. .Bitza, 34 0.E.0. and a 2$ Bitza, Riding at Opotiki last Monday, Arnott put up some splendid times and is riding particularly well this season. Coleman will most likely find -niost opposition coming from this consistent “throttle twister” in the championship event. H. Holler .(Hawera) ex-middle-weight champion of New Zealand, who represented the Dominion at the T.T. races on the Islo of Man in 1926, and won several events on the English tracks against the best riders in England. Cass Goodwin, of Auckland, exlightweight champion of iNI.Z., who won two events at Opotiki last week. W. Herbert (Auckland) who came home a winner in the Gisborne Open Handicap at the Park last Boxing Day. A. Harker, of Napier, the wellknown Zenith rider, who is a consistent place getter. In addition there are other numerous riders from all over the Island. A good day’s sport is assured to all lovers of speed, and patrons should witness some of the ’ fastest riding to he seen in ihe Southern Hemisphere. As advertised in Hi is issue, the first race will start at 12.15 p.m. and a special train will leave town for the course gates. Special arrangements: have been made for the parking of cars and luncheon and afternoon tea are obtainable on the grounds. The official handicapper, Mr S, M. Jephson, of Opotiki. will he present at the meeting' to .adjust the handicaps for the different events.
