Secrets of Good Health

TALK TO THE MAN OVER 50,

(By Sir W. Arbuthnot Lane, Bart., C. 8.) When a man has passed .the meridian of life he begins to take stock of the future. If engaged in a profession or business requiring much mental concentration and a capacity to give decisions and make judgments promptly he not infrequently feels in his own mind that his mental capacity is not as efficient as he would wish. Probably fils • digestion has not been as good as it used to be, his bowels act only once daily. That such a man will benefit enormously by giving up all _ animal food is certain. His intestines are acting sluggishly, the food contents have Income contaminated by deleterious organisms which have ascended from the foul, stagnating contents of the large bowel, and this poisoning has been possibly accentuated by the swallowing of septic material from gums and teeth affected with pyorrhoea. ;

FOOD AND' EXERCISE.

This form of poisoning can be eliminated at once by giving up all animal food, and by restricting the diet to those materials which, if kept in such as a safe, cannot produce matter which can damage or destroy life. It is by the absorption into the circulation of those poisonous products that diseases, of all sorts arise. To such a man abundance of water at suitable periods, whole wheat products, whether in the form of bread or porridge, uncooked grape-fruit and oranges, salads abundantly dressed with olive oil, dairy produce, oriel* steamed vegetables will afford all 'the nourishment required with sufficient roughage to produce an Evacuation of the large bowel at an interval after each .meal. He should spend more time over his meals, and should allow a sufficient interval before resuming his business. A largo and abundant breakfast, a small lunch, and a moderate* amount of food at his dinner supplemented with alcohol and tobacco in strict moderation, will provide him with alt the nourishment and satisfaction lie requires.
