KEEPING COMMON GAMING HOUSE.
FINE OF £IOO IMPOSED,
WELLINGTON, Dec. 20. Denis William Driscoll and Reginald John McEwan were convicted by Mr. Hunt, S.M., on a charge of keeping a common gaming-house, and a fine of £IOO was imposed oar each defendant with costs. Commenting on the case, Mr. Hunt said had the defendants been operating in a big way and bad they told lies in their evidence the penalty would have been . heavier. , jHe said there was ample evidence a conviction in the c.asp., J f ... V : 'Clii4f'detective Ward-said- it was only fair'to say about the men that; they did do a certain amount of punting, but did not make a living solely by betting. They liad been before tlie Court in February last on a. charge of keeping a gaming-house, and had been convicted and fined.
