RAILWAY ENGINES COLLIDE.

ACCIDENT AT THORNDON. DRIVER. KILLED. WELLINGTON, Dec. 20. A collision occurred between two engines in Thorndon railway yard, which resulted in one driver, W. J. Hopkirk, losing his life. One engine was going to Lambton station and the other was about to cross the main line. HopkirkV engine was struck above the left cylinder box so forcibly as to throw it off the lines on fio its side. The fireman got clear, but Hopkirk was crushed between the engine and ground, and was so injured that he died shortly after removal to the hospital. The signalman, it is stated, saw the engines approaching, and gave the danger signal, but deceased was on the other side and could not see it. He was 50 years of age, and leaves a widow. —Press Assn.
