ROWING.

POVERTY BAY CLUB

The racing for the second trial fours, for trophies presented by the Mayor, was commenced last evening over the Taruheru course, finishing at the band rotunda, E. Warren’s crew defeated fi. Patty’s, and D. Menzies’ defeated IJ. Stichbury’s. The first race was very keen to the Derby Street bridge, but at the rowing sheds Warren had gained a length’s lead. After passing through Peel Street bridge, Patty challenged, but failed to close up, Warren winning by a short length.

The second race was very evenly contested. Prom the start they raced level to the rowing sheds, where Menzies gained a slight lead. Past the Peel Street bridge Stichbury drew up a little but Menzies spurted down the home straight and passed the post with threequarters of a length to the good. The rowing of all crews was very keen, and the losers in both races put up a very game elfort. The heats will be continued this evening, when L. Winter meets E. McGuffie, A. Drummond meets J. Lloyd, and E. O’Neill meets C. Clarke.

Last night was the first occasion on which a race has been rowed over the Taruheru course this season, and the trial proved the work done by the Harbor Board in clearing the banks to be entirely satisfactory. The matter of rowing races on a course leading through the spans of "Roebuck Road and Peel Street bridges, was likewise proved quite feasible, and no difficulty whatever was experienced. All the club’s races will in future be rowed on the Taruheru course, finishing at the band rotunda. Read’s Quay. This arrangement will enable spectators to have a much better view of races than was obtainable on the Waimata course.
