CITIZENS’ DEFENCE COMMITTEE.
WIFE’S ALLOWANCE SUFFICIENT.
Idle ordinary meeting of the Citizens’ Defence Committee was held yesterday afternoon, Air H. Ivenway presiding. There were also present: Messrs G. B. Oman. R. M. Birrell, J. Fletcher, F. C. Gaddum, D. J. Barry G. A. Runeiman. G. AY. Humphreys E. J. Williams, AY. J. Sinclair, G. Wildish, J. B. Broadhurst, G. Stock, A. H. Wallis, G. AI. Reynolds. G. O. Munns, J. S. AVauchop, H. White, D. M. Coleman and AY. Pitt. The chairman of the Matawai Defence Committee wrote stating that he had interviewed two soldiers’ wives in the district and they had assured him that they were receiving ample allowance from t-lie Government. He therefore asked the Committee to dicontinue the payment of 10s a week assistance. The Matawai Committee would like to assist any very needful cases in that district. The letter was received. The Secretary of the Cook Hospital and Charitable Aid Board forwarded a statement of account for soldiers’ extras for July amounting to £lB 10s 3d. i , The amount was passed for payment. . „ ~ The financial statement for the fortnight ending September 2, was as follows: — Defence Department warrant £lB 15s; refund of amount advanced against pension £2; ‘Anonymous’ Y.ALC.A. (August) „100; “Anonymous” British Bed Cross Fund, " £100; total £220 15s 9d. The expenditure for the same period was £296 Is 7d.
