THE TURF.

V.R.C. SPRING MEETING.

WESTCOURT WINS THE MELBOURNE CUP.

MOST EXCITING FINISH ON RECORD.

United Press Association—Copyright. (Received November 6, 8 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Oct. 6. Anticipations of the biggest Cup crowd on record' were undoubtedly realised. The weather was bright and cool and every corner of the course was crowded, while thousands viewed the races from Footscray, across the river.

On the strength of the English horse Lanias’s only two appearances in public, he was selected as the public fancy, and promised to become as great- a favorite as was Revenue when ne won the Cup at 7 to 4 in 1901. He never receded, but- became a firmer favorite to-day. The English horse, however, never threatened much trouble. Turning for home, Lingle and Westcourt clearly had the race to settle between them, and they provided the most exciting finish ever seen at the Cup. Old Obi’s Hurdle wjn was very popular, while Outlook,, in the Nu r sevy, made hacks of his opponents in the last furlong. Following are the results.:—

Hurdles.—Obi 1, Demacles 2, Westendale 3. Ten started. Obi was always handy and won by 2) lengths. Time, 3min 45)sec. Railway High-weight.—Quesara 1, Red Rock 2, Belgian Waif 3. Eighteen started. Red Rock was always prominent and was being proclaimed the winner when Quesara cut down on the outside and won by a length. Time, lmin 13)see. Nursery Handicap.—Outlook 1, Red Dome 2, 'Lomali and Verdun (dead heat) 3. Twenty-two starters.- Red Dome was. first across the tan.
