SOLDIERS’ DEBTS.

The Secretary of the AVar Office, w T ho has received many applications from tradesmen and others in regard to debts of officers and soldiers, lias notified the public that as applications continue to be received in the War Office and by commanding officers from tradesmen and individuals for assistance in the recovery of debts due to them by officers and soldiers serving in the Army, it has been found dpsirahle to inform the public that the military authorities have no power to enforce payment, and they are unable to assist in the recovery of private debts. All persons who give credit to officers and soldiers do so at their own risk. Officers are as amenable to tlie Civil law of the country as any other class of His Majesty’s subjects, and in regard to soldiers the Army List provides that: —. _ , _ ,! A soldier of His Majesty’s Regular Forces shall not he liable to bo taken out of His Majesty’s service by any process, execution or order of any Court of Law or otherwise, or to be compelled to appear m person before any Court of Law, except on account of anv debt, damages, or sum of money, when the amount exceeds £3O over and above all costs of suit.
