THE JUDGE’S REPORT.

WORK OF GISBORNE CITY BAND REVIEWED.

The following aro the reports of Captain W. G. Bentley, tho judge, on the various selections in which tho Gisborne City Band competed at tho Exhibition contest; - First Test, “Classic Gems’!., No. 1, Gisborne City Band: Marcia. —Attack not good, tone and balance very good and ensemble also. Sopranos very good on repetition, but not together at 15. Andante.—Accompaniments very good. Euphonium very good tone and expression, but no ores, at 11, and soprano broke at 14. Ensemble rice at 14, and cornet joins nicely at 18. Baritone broke at 25, and soprano at 29. Trombone too prominent here. Gavotte.—Ensemble very good here, and nice forte at 9 tone and balance very good at 17, and excellent finish ; but solo cornet broke in second group of cadenza. Moderato.—Excellent opening. Solo good' tone, and marks well attended. Soprano very good at 12, but straining at 16, and broke agam at 20. Ensemble very good hero, and excellent finish.

Allegretto.—Baritone has wrong rhythm in first two bars, cornet not in tune 19 and 20, excellent ensemble at 27 and on. Too loud for forte at 41. Adagio.—Ensemble very good here, blit solo phrasing wrong at 8 and broke Fat 11. Too loud for forte, but nicely at 13 and 14. Balance very good, but soprano not safe at 17, and rather out of tune. Allegro.—Good attack, tone and balance very good. Cornet: straining at 17 and 18, and had at 23. Tone and balance very good and excellent finish. Points.—Accuracy of notes, time, etc. 18, intonation 19, quality of tone 18, balance of tone 18, expression and executive skill 18, attack and finish 10, pace 10, general effect 27 ; total 138. “Tho Works of Haydn,” No. 10, Gisborne City Band.—

Attack excellent, but not good at 4, and trill only fair. Vivace.—Precision and attack verygood, tone and balance excellent at 28. Adagio.—Tone and balance excellent here. Allegro.—Basses too loud for f, and soprano bungles at 8. Trombone rough at 10, but ensemble nice at 13. Very good cres. at 28, and tone and balance at 32, but did not hear soprano at 35, the top A flat out of tune at 38. Soprano too loud at 43, and all too loud at 47. Last chord at 52 too short, and the last note broke either in soprano or solo. Adagio.—Horn very unsteady at opening, and soprano broke G at 4, and in difficulties again on repetition. Harmony fair; soprano broke at 8. Dathcr on the slow side. Horn and euphonium not in tune at 16 and 17, and not enough F at 19; good cres. Maestoso.—Cornets not together in semiquavers at 3; euphonium good tone, but runs up at 7; Band not in tune at 15 and on ; soprano out on G at 21. Euphonium good tone and expression, and accompaniments well down at 30 and on. Euphonium still good, but hurries semi-quavers at 50. Ver- good ensemble at 52, and tone and balance at 58. Euphonium cadenza excellent, quite right. An excellent finish. Allegretto.—Excellent ensemble, tone and balance very good, but inclined to bo brassy. Adagio.—Articulation in 3 not correct. Trombone excellent tone, and very good expression ; rather forced at 11. Octaves very good at 17 and on. but forcing again at 22. Excellent cres. and dim. at 29, and trombones stand out well. Excellent ensemble at 37 and on. Trombone broke slur at 40. and solo broke G at 43, but trombone's expression still excellent. Excellent unison at 48 and 9, and ensemble at 51 and 2. Crochets at- 54 and G in trombone too much like quavers, and broke slur in octaves in 2nd group, otherwise excellent. Bottom notes are weak. Allegro.—Execution of cornets very good, and tone and balance also at 16. Baritone broke quavers at 27 and 8, and bungled at 36 and on, cornets also. Excellent precision at 45 and 51. An excellent finish. Maestoso. —Tone and balance excellent. Moderate.—Tempo too fast. Soprano bungles at 4,8, 9 and 10, and no expression in solo. This is burlesque, Excellent precision at 19. Trombone too loud at 20. Do not like this. Excellent cres. at finish. Andante. —Tone too strong for f, but very good and excellent ensemble at 7. Allegro.—Entries excellent. Soprano broke F at 11. Excellent ensemble, but- trombone too loud all through. Excellent cres. at 35 and 6. and ensemble at 37. Excellent finish. Points.—Accuracy of notes, time, etc, 18. intonation 19, quality of tone 20, balance of tone 20. expression and executive skill 18, attack, finish 9, pace 9, general effect 30 j total 143. “A” Grade. March, No. -5: Attack excellent, but trombones too prominent at 5 and 6. Excellent drums, but cornets art* straining at melody at 24. and do not tongue grace note. Bungling at 32, and no emphasis at 37 and 8. Tempo nice, but no Fz and bungled Fat 53. No soprano at 57, and bungling all notes after. Crochets at 38 not emphasised, not. massive at grandioso, on 59 and 60. Melody unsteady at 70 and on, and not enough ores, at 15 and 16. Cornets straining badly and not true in pitch, but good finish. Points awarded 88 —100.
