GISBORNE BOWLING CLUB.

ANNUAL MEETING

The annual meeting of the Gisborne Bowling Club was held last evening. Mr W. Pettie presided and there was a large attendance of members. The annual report stated, ‘ inter alia: The club membership now stands at 90 active, 23 honorary, and 1 life member. Several new members joined the club during the past season. The balance-sheet shows the profit and loss account for the year ending 30th July, the profit for the year, being £54 15s 3d. Your committee, recognising that- the greens were not in a satisfactory state, engaged Mr H. Benson, of Wellington, to report on the best methods of improving them, and he has since been appointed greenkeeper, at a salary of £175 per annum. The large green has been dug up, levelled and resown, and the smaller green -has been top-dressed and levelled. Various other improvements have been carried out, and bo-t-li greens should be in first-class playing order next season. Your committee lias gone thoroughly into the best means of drainage installation and lavatory accommodation, and have had plans and estimates made of the cost, including some alterations to the old pavilion. Your committee has to record with feelings of deep regret the loss of one of our members, Mr A. F. Kennedy, who passed away last year. The thanks of the club are due to the local papers for the manner m which .our tournament and other games have been reported, and also to the green committee (especially Mr T. Corson) for the time and attention they have given to the management cf the green. Special thanks are due to those ladies who kindly dispensed afternoon tea during the Easter tournament. A matter in regard to the champion singles was mentioned by Mr Kyme. He pointed out that there were three sections in the competition and in one of them two competitors (Messrs J. Martin and McMillan) were allowed to play in the final- Mr McMillan was unbeaten while Mr Martin, who- eventually won, was defeated in one game before the final was reached. There was a great deal of discussion on the subject during which the chairman explained that the match committee thought there was a tie in the section and owing to the lateness of the season decided in order to get the competition through to allow both competitors to compete in the final. Mr Martin met Mr McMillan in tho very first round of the final and defeated him.

It was decided that the champion singles as decided by the committee should stand and that it be an instruction to the committee that in future only one' winner from each section be' allowed to compete in the final.

The election of officers resulted: President, Mr W. Pettie: vice-presi-dent, Mr T. B. Corson; lion, treasurer, Mr W. J. Hennessy; hon. secretary, Mr C. Maher; committee, Messrs* Brown, Crawford, Smith and Allen; hon. auditor, Mr H. E. Dodd. An lionorium of five guineas was voted to the retiring honorary secretary (Mr L. T. Brown).
