THE FIJI EMBEZZLEMENT CHARCES.
ACCUSED BEFORE THE AUCKLAND COURT. [PEE PEESS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND. July 31. On the arrival of the Zcalandm au Auckland this morning from Vancouver via the islands a first-class passenger named "William Greenland was arrested on a charge of having stolen £36 of the moneys of tho Fiji Fran. Company at Suva, of which he was secretary. He was broil girt, before the Police Court and remanded for a week pending the arrival of papers and escort from Fiji to take him hack to Suva to meet the charge. Greenland was accompanied on the boat by his wife, they having hooked to Sydney.
Mr W. Haokett appeared for accused and applied for bail. , Ho stated that Greenland and his wife were on their way to Sydney for a holiday and had had every intention of returning to Suva.
Counsel said that, the matters which formed the subject of the charge would probably be explained in the meantime by wireless, enabling tlie charge to be withdrawn. Bail was requested and was fixed at one surety of £2OO in addition to accused’s own bond for that amount.
