PERSONAL NOTES.

Sir Geo. Clifford and Mr R. H. Nolan, members of the recently-appointed Racing Commission, are expected to arrive in Gisborne this morning. During their stay in Gisborne they will inspect the courses of the two local clubs. It is understood that Mr A. S. Wachsmann will be a candidate for the Harbour Board election in the interests of the payers of dues. Lord Denham, Australia’s new Gov-ernor-General, is a remarkably goodlooking man, but lie is far from rich, having inherited little beyond the title from> his grand-uncle. Lord Denham’s father-in-law, Lord Cowdray, is enormously wealthy, and is a prominent figure. in' the Liberal ranks. The new Gov-ernor-General achieved distinction in the Beer war ,and was wounded in action. Since 1908 he has been variously a Chief Whip in. the House of Lords, Lord-in-Waiting to the King, Captain of the Gentlemen-at-Arms, and Privy Councillor, additionally representing the Irish Office and the Treasury in the House cf Lords.

A pleasant surprise was sprung upon the conductor of the Gisborne City Band (Mr. A. E. Lawrence) and Air. A. J. Strong (hon, accompanist to the band) at the interval of the practice last evening. Bandmaster Miller, in a neat speech, referred to the .many estimable qualities of the conductor, and presented him. with a- handsome gold medal (suitably inscribed) as a small token of the esteem) in which fie was held by the members, who recognised that the success the band was attaining was mainly due to the great amount of enthusiasm displayed by Mr. Lawrence. The Band’s chairman (Air. Wilkinson) then, presented Air. Strong with a silver biscuit barre'll (also engraved). The chairman referred to the accompanist’s genial nature, which, combined with Ins unquestioned ability brought the members to feel that-they were indeed fortunate' in having his interest centred in Band matters. The recipients suitably rcspomkd. and after tlire£ cheers had. been given bv tlie bandsmen, the piaetice proceeded.
