STOCK ROAD.

At the meeting of the Whautaupoko r Road Board yesterday afternoon, Mr Lysnar brought up the subject of a road being opened near what is known as “ the island ” at the XVainiata river. Mr Lysnar said that he had been asked to bring the matter up by the directors of the Gisborne Freezing Company. The locality was within the jurisdiction of the Board, and if they weje willing to take a roadway there, he believed that both Preez’ing Companies would assist in defraying the cost. The object of taking the road would be to provide a way lor driving stock across without having f to use the bridges always.* It was absolutely necessary that something ( should be done in the way of provid- , ing a crossing other than the bridges,; ( The Chairman (Mr Matthews : They. ] could only cross there at low water. Mr Lysnar : Yes, but that would be , better than blocking bridges, getting : the stock knocked about, and causing everyone inconvenience. It would, he added, be sufficient then to formj a committee to report on the matter at next meeting. The land was owned by Mr Hall, and he believed if he were approached in the matter, he would be prepared to meet them reasonably; and to facilitate matters 1 . The Chairman : \Ve would not require to have the road formed ? Mr Lysnar : No, we would be taking it over for public purposes as a publio road. He believed any cost incurred by the Board in taking such a road would be refunded by those interested. The Chairman said that he was favorable to the proposal under certain conditions—that stock should take the Hill road instead of Riverside road, as it would be dangerous to have stock travelling on the Riverside, and further that the Board be put to no expense in the matter. Years ago, when the land was being sold, he had endeavored to get a road kept open at the place mentioned. ' " :■ Mr Lysnar said that receptacles could be made along Riverside road to enable people to get out of the way of stock, and ! they could mako the proposal subject to necessary precautions being taken. The Chairman said no doubt for fodder purposes most of the stock would be driven by the Hill roadl but it would be dangerous to have mobs of cattle on .the Riverside road. Mr Hamon : It is very narrow. On the motion of Mr Lysnar, seconded by Mr HamoD, Messrs Matthews, Hamon, and ‘Lysnar were appointed a committee to report at Dext meeting.
