A RETRACTION.
At, the Borough Council meeting last night, the following letter was received from Mr Stephenson Smith, Survey Office “ Dear Sir,-I have the honor to acknowledge, the receipt of your letter agreeing to contribute towards Hip. cost- the standard marks for the survey of the town of Gisborne, and to thank you for it* I much regret, however, that while ilia, king thefrequest I was instructed to make upon your Council, I. was so unfortunate as to cloUie J V^on in such a clumsy mode of expression as to give you any cause lor offence, Believe me, nothing was further from mir intention ; but in such matters I hold that it is imperative that my meaning should be above all thills clear, and I greatly regret that in my anxiety to avoid ambiguity I unintentionally gave offence—lor altliouch the request was not mme, I alone am responsible for the language m which it was put. I. trust that iq any further transaction I may, be more fortunate.”
