“POPLARS IN GARDENS SHOULD BE REMOVED”
The row of poplars at the Botanical Gardens, which has provided a subject for at least one water-colour exponent in the district, are dangerous in high winds. They may be removed. This was stated in a report to the Gisborne Borough Council last night. The report stated that the trees appeared to be upwards of 70 years old and many were showing signs of decay. After commenting that they should be removed, the report stated that the supervising gardener had recommended planting the area witn alternate pohutukawas and aspen poplars, the aspen poplars to be removed when ths pohutukawas reached a good size. A suggestion that the reserves committee visit the site was adopted by the council.
