Three Ridings In Uawa County Will Increase Rates
(Herald Correspondent.)
Three ridings of the Uawa County, which still retains it riding accounts, will pay higher rates during the 195051 rating year. An indication to this effect was given at the monthly meeting of the council, held on Friday, when the annual estimates were under consideration.
The estimates comprised the principal business of the meeting apart from a review of the flood-damage situation. It was agreed that Hauiti. Mangaheia and Mangatuna ridings would have to increase their rate to meet current expenses.
The Tolaga Bay riding rate was increased last year, but other ridings have been able to manage without change for some years. The increases in wages and material costs noted in late years have now forced the hands of the council. Severe flood damage during the month has brought the matter to a head. but. prior to the flood there were indications that ratepayers would have to find more money. Confirmation at August Meeting
The new scale of rates will be placed before the August meeting of the council for confirmation.
The meeting received a report from the countv electrician. Mr. L. Hall, on the effects of the recent storm upon Tolaga Bay’s power reticulation. Stoppages due to broken power-lines had occurred, said Mr. Hall, and during the height of the storm it had been thought wise to shut off power to eliminate danger from live wires falling. Normal service had been restored a week after the flood.
The chairman, Mr. H. R. Irving, expressed thanks to the county electrician for the service given during the emergency. commenting that Mr. Hall had spared no effort to restore power as early as possible.
