ALL FISHING BOATS AT SEA: DISPUTE ENDS
Agreement has been reached by the Gisborne Fishermen’s Association and the ilsh wholesalers in Gisborne, bringing to an end a six-weeks-old dispute regarding the ex-boat price cf fish.
The result will be a slight increase in tile price paid to the fishermen. The arrangement is a give-and-take one on the two sets of prices forming the basis of the dispute. The full fishing fleet left port this morning. One of the conditions of the agreement, however, was that the fishermen would continue with their wharf sales daily until and including Friday. It was their wish to keep faith with the people who had supported them wholeheartedly in patronising ex-boat sates during the past week. “Ex-boat sales were commenced as a temporary measure. While the fishermen were gratified with the response from the public, they realise now,, as before, that such a course is uneconomic.’’ said a fisherman today. “Only two or three boats can fish at a time and have to spend a short fishing day to get back to the wharf in time to dispose of the catch. There is always trouble with the surplus fish.”
